Shutout Mindset: Practical Approach Emerging as Key for Tottenham
Overpowering the opposition was the approach at Spurs last season but now the focus is on preventing goals at the other end of the stadium.
Tuesday's 1-0 win over Villarreal in Spurs' UCL first match was the fourth clean sheet they had kept in the first five games this season.
Conversely, they had kept just one at the same stage of last term, when the more offensive Ange Postecoglou was in command.
“We discussed a lot about 'defensive mentality' this year because we allowed a lot last year,” Spurs midfielder Lucas Bergvall stated.
Star defender Micky van de Ven added: “I think we are a challenging team to play against, for sure. Organisationally we are standing really good and we all know what to do, so we're a difficult team to beat.”
The strategy of the team against their opponents was in clear contrast to the attacking football played during Postecoglou.
They were much more defensive, even after being gifted a quick-fire opener thanks to a disastrous mistake by the opposition goalkeeper Luiz Junior.
Improved Backline but at an Offensive Cost?
Spurs have let in only one goal this season - in the 1-0 loss to their Premier League rivals.
That is a major improvement on how they kicked off the previous campaign, when they let in five goals in their first five games.
In the English top flight they have kept multiple shutouts already - meaning they are just a couple short from equalling their total for the complete of last season.
The more reliable platform is possibly coming at a cost, however, with their one shot on target against Villarreal the second time in their last three games they had recorded very limited efforts on goal.
The head coach acknowledges this is an area that has to improve.
“We have a very good foundation to stand on in terms of our defensive organisation and I think it's effective and we gave not much away,” he said.
“We're playing in the Champions League against a quality team. Additionally, I knew we took a step forward against their London rivals, going forward is the area we need to get better.”
