Former Federal Bureau of Investigation director James the ex-FBI chief has entered an innocent plea to making false statements to congressional representatives and obstructing a congressional proceeding.
The former director's legal representative submitted the plea representing him in a federal court in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday morning.
The defense lawyer announced he would seek to have the case dismissed for multiple reasons including that his the accused, a detractor of President Donald Trump, was being targeted.
Mr Comey was formally accused shortly after Trump urged his chief prosecutor to move forward against him.
At the proceedings on Wednesday, his attorney Patrick Fitzgerald told the judge they intended to submit multiple petitions to dismiss the legal matter before a trial, arguing the prosecution was vindictive and that a US attorney was improperly assigned to handle the case.
The former director's case was originally overseen by Erik Siebert, who left his position under scrutiny from the former president after his examination into another political adversary - the New York official - was unable to bring criminal charges.
The former director seemed in positive mood as he entered the legal venue on Wednesday, speaking with his attorneys and sharing humor. He was supported by his wife, his wife and child Maureen, a US lawyer who the previous administration recently fired.
After listening to the magistrate read his rights and the dual charges against him in the courtroom on mid-week, Mr Comey was inquired if he comprehended the charges.
"I do your honour. Thank you," he stated to the judge.
James Comey was the chief of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 2013-2017 and was fired about a few months into Trump's first term as president. At the time, the director was overseeing an examination into foreign election meddling and whether there were any links between the Russian government and the election effort.
Throughout his leadership, the director triggered a backlash from liberal politicians when he declared just days before the 2016 election that he was examining political contender Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server. Legal actions against Hillary Clinton were not pursued, leading to criticism from Republicans as well.
The federal government claim Mr Comey gave untrue statements to the legislature during a legislative proceeding in 2020 when he was being interrogated about both the Clinton investigation as well as the election interference investigation. They allege he provided false information to the legislative body by claiming he had not permitted someone at the Federal Bureau of Investigation to disclose to news outlets details about the government examinations.
Legal representatives also allege the defendant of "improperly attempting to sway, hinder and delay" the legislative group by making false statements to it.
Via social media the former director shared to his Instagram after he was charged, he declared he was innocent and charged Trump of conducting himself like a "tyrant".
"My family and I have been aware for a long time that there are consequences to opposing the former president," he commented. "We will not live on our knees."
"I am not guilty," he stated further. "Therefore proceed with a court case."
The charges against Mr Comey surfaced after Trump shared on digital channels calling for his top legal official, the attorney general, take legal action against the former director and other people.
