A Danish citizen has been convicted of uploading sexually explicit segments from copyrighted films and television shows on the online site Reddit.
Based on a law enforcement document reviewed by BBC News, the anonymous man shared 347 video excerpts of explicit content in a Reddit group he managed, which were then viewed 4.2 million-plus times.
Danish authorities state he has been given a 7-month suspended sentence for violating copyright laws.
Legal analysts say the defendant was charged under a seldom-invoked provision in Denmark's copyright law, with the judge finding that by removing the footage out of their original context, the man had harmed the artists' "moral rights".
He has also been convicted of distributing more than 25 terabytes of protected data.
From March 2022 to May 2023, the man known as "the pseudonym KlammereFyr" on Reddit posted sexually explicit scenes including over 100 actresses.
He shared them in the subreddit he was a administrator of.
Per the Denmark's copyright protection group The Rights Alliance (TRA), his subreddit had more than 6,000 members and users were encouraged to ask for excerpts of particular actors.
In 2023, advocates reported the case to the police on behalf of the impacted actors, filmmakers and production companies, which resulted in the forum being shut down.
Andrea Vagn Jensen, among the actresses whose explicit content were circulated in the community, explained to local broadcasters at the time she believed there was a distinction between being seen unclothed in a film and being shown on Reddit.
The performer stated the uploads amounted to "abuse".
The defendant was detained in September 2024 and pleaded culpable to the charges last month.
In a statement after the ruling, TRA head Maria Fredenslund remarked the outcome sent an "significant" message "that violations of artists' rights have consequences".
The ruling is considered unprecedented in the country for its application of the "ethical protections" clause of the Danish Copyright Act, which specifies an artist's creation cannot be utilized in a way which infringes upon their reputation.
Copyright law specialist Dr Alina Trapova told BBC News the legal matter was "unusual" for its emphasis on the harm to the dignity of an performer, rather than to them financially.
The extent to which the case could affect other countries is uncertain.
But she added there may be "more and more of such cases" in the future with the growth of AI, where "the integrity of an individual's work might be compromised with greater ease".
