A daily slimming tablet could help individuals cut their body weight by up to 20%, as per a study that could pave the way for countless people more individuals to lose weight.
The drug, known as orforglipron, focuses on the same gut hormone receptors as weight loss injections like Mounjaro and Wegovy. During research of 3,127 participants, 20% of users who took the once-a-day pill for 72 weeks lost 20% or more of their body weight.
Weight loss injections have been transformative, but oral forms are seen as a holy grail since they are easier to store, share and take, and may also be expected to be cheaper, offering fresh hope for many people attempting to lose weight.
The medication is a GLP-1 stimulant, a type of drug that aids in reducing blood sugar levels, delays the breakdown of food and may reduce appetite.
Slimming results observed among people using the pill is not as stark as those in users using tirzepatide, but experts believe the oral form is more accessible and user-friendly compared with injections.
Orforglipron has not been approved by the FDA or regulators in additional nations. The manufacturer stated it anticipates significant demand when the oral treatment is released.
During the trial, the 3,127 patients were split into cohorts taking the medication tablets of varying strengths, while others received a dummy pill, for 72 weeks.
Each of the volunteers were diagnosed with obesity, indicating they had a BMI score of 30 or over, but they were free from high blood sugar. Participants from several nations were involved in the study.
Scientists found that after 72 weeks people on the lowest dose reduced an mean of nearly 8% of their body weight. Participants on the maximum amount shed an mean of 11.2% of their weight.
Among users taking the highest doses, more than half had a decrease of at least 10% of weight, over a third had a reduction of 15% or greater, and 18.4% had a reduction of 20% or more.
Researchers reported additional health metrics also got better among participants using the drug, such as better BP, a smaller waist size and a reduction in bad cholesterol.
Frequent side-effects were stomach-related, which were said to be manageable.
“Among participants with excess weight, 72-week use with orforglipron resulted in notable reductions in body weight than inactive treatment,” researchers noted.
Medical leaders have hailed weight loss drugs as transformative. But injections involve additional work for health services, so oral options might benefit millions more individuals aiming to slim down.
Separate studies shows slimming injections may be successful on minors starting from six who are obese or are diagnosed with diabetes. But, stomach problems were “significantly more common” in young users using the drugs.
Experts emphasized that extended observation periods in upcoming studies and additional real-world analysis were crucial to establish the long-term effects.”
