A Tooth Fairy Tale Film Analysis: Animated Adventure with a Sprinkling of Family-Friendly Preteen Love Story

Throughout this cartoon adventure aimed at tweens, the fairy community focuses on collecting baby teeth of slumbering youngsters and leaving gold beneath where they sleep. Skateboarding teenage rebel fairy Van (voiced by Booboo Stewart) is less than thrilled about spending his future to gathering baby teeth—a feeling that’s completely understandable. He is just a bit more interested in the financial workings behind it all: the fairies hand over the molars to unseen goblins, who supply gold as payment. But Van’s curiosity grows when he spots a goblin (played by Larkin Bell), who turns out to be far from the hideous gnome he expected.

A Forbidden Bond and Shared Threat

The stage is set for an exciting quest with a light sprinkling of young love (even though it remains very much suitable for younger kids). The goblin and fairy communities are separated from each other, and there’s nothing like the excitement of secrecy to bring people as one. Both groups as seen here are incredibly similar, yet each holds prejudiced beliefs about the other. Fairies are said to be self-centered types, given to taking whatever they fancy, while the goblins are allegedly stupid, foul-smelling, and primitive, but are actually bright and advanced in technology.

Naturally, such a setup requires a shared foe to join forces against, and that need is met by a group of vicious spiders, with voices by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. They make no secret about their intentions: they aim to devour the fairies and goblins, and they serve as quite savage, if not especially competent, villains.

Target Audience and Overall Impression

There aren’t very many children’s animations targeting the kind of audience that is starting to experience first crushes, but are not old enough for whatever teenagers view these days instead of Twilight. If your child falls into this age group, it probably won’t to become their new all-time fave, but it’s a decent choice.

The Tooth Fairy Story releases in movie theaters in Scotland from 10 October and across the United Kingdom beginning October 24.
